WASHINGTON, D.C. — Senate Republicans successfully summoned Mitch McConnell from the realm of the dead Wednesday after determining that passing a farm bill would require one additional vote and a modest violation of the natural order.
The 84-year-old Kentucky senator had spent three months on what his office called “medical leave,” a designation aides clarified includes both physical therapy and passage across the River Styx.
“We had eleven votes. We needed twelve,” a Republican aide explained. “We were not going to let some tunnel of light dictate agricultural policy.”
The summoning took place shortly before the committee meeting, with staff dimming the lights, joining hands, and arranging twelve battery-operated candles around McConnell’s nameplate. An intern was instructed to read the farm bill aloud until something stirred.
“Senator McConnell, if you are with us, give us a sign,” whispered the committee clerk.
For several moments, nothing happened. Then a voice emerged from the darkness.
“Is this on the amendment or the underlying bill?”
“That’s him,” an aide said.
McConnell materialized beside his chair in a cloud of sulfur, where staff handed him a briefing folder and reminded him to avoid reporters in the hallway.
Asked whether he had seen the face of God, the senator said he was focused on delivering results for Kentucky’s farm families.
The vote proceeded normally, apart from a brief procedural dispute over whether a soul could be counted toward a quorum. The parliamentarian resolved the matter after finding that the Senate’s rules required members to be present but had apparently never anticipated the need to specify alive.
The bill advanced 12–11.
“We respect the senator’s privacy during this difficult transition,” a spokesperson said, carefully stepping over a crack in the floor from which voices were begging for release. “Questions about which plane he currently occupies should be directed to his office.”
The Grim Reaper, waiting outside the hearing room with a visitor badge, expressed frustration with the delay.
“They told me one vote,” he said. “Now someone’s offering an amendment.”
Republican leadership praised McConnell’s commitment to public service, noting that many younger Americans miss work for reasons considerably less serious than being dead.
For his part, McConnell described the interruption as unfortunate.
“I had found peace,” he said. “Then the whip’s office called.”
McConnell was eventually permitted to return to eternal rest, provided he kept his phone on.
