Americans began the difficult process of healing Wednesday after officials confirmed that a promising local relationship had ended following three dates, abruptly closing one of the most consequential romantic chapters of the week.

The relationship, which began several days ago and was believed to have a strong chance of continuing for several additional days, reportedly included coffee, honest conversations, mutual respect, one particularly good night, and preliminary negotiations concerning future hangouts.

“This is a devastating moment for everyone who became aware of the relationship within the past 48 hours,” said family friend Margaret Quince. “They seemed compatible. We had every reason to believe there might eventually be a fourth date.”

News of the separation spread rapidly Wednesday morning, prompting an outpouring of support from friends, acquaintances, and people who had only recently learned that the man was dating someone.

Flags across the region were lowered to three-quarters staff—one quarter for each date completed—as grief counselors were deployed to local group chats. Volunteers distributed coffee, reassuring clichés, and statements reminding the public that there are “plenty of fish in the sea.”

Financial markets opened largely unchanged, despite the man privately assuming the news would have broader economic consequences.

The brief relationship began when two adults matched on a dating application and successfully completed an introductory coffee summit. Diplomatic relations warmed quickly, leading to further meetings and increasingly candid bilateral discussions.

Sources close to the couple said the two exchanged classified information concerning past relationships, personal insecurities, and what they were ultimately looking for in a partner. Early compatibility reports showed encouraging levels of honesty, comfort, attraction, and mutual respect.

However, independent analysts warned that the findings were based on a dangerously small sample size.

“Three dates can produce promising preliminary data, but they are not sufficient to establish long-term romantic stability,” explained Dr. Mildred Crumb, director of the National Institute for Early Relationship Statistics. “At that stage, neither participant has even witnessed the other person become irrationally angry at a malfunctioning printer.”

The relationship ended before either party could develop any substantial grievances, forget an anniversary, argue about thermostat settings, or spend 45 minutes deciding what to order for dinner.

The man addressed the nation shortly after the news became public.

“My fellow Americans, there will be no fourth date,” he announced while standing behind a podium hastily constructed from two kitchen stools. “I understand that this news will be difficult for many of you, particularly those hearing about the relationship for the first time during this statement.”

He emphasized that the separation was peaceful and that no hostile parties were responsible.

“She was kind, honest, and respectful,” he said. “Sometimes two good people meet, enjoy each other’s company, open up considerably, and then one of them decides not to continue. This is apparently permitted under current dating regulations.”

The man then asked the public to respect his privacy during the next several hours.

His two cats, who had been briefed on the possibility of welcoming a new person into their lives, appeared largely unaffected by the announcement. Both returned immediately to sleep and later issued a joint statement confirming that household operations would continue without interruption.

“We remain focused on our core priorities: eating, yelling, and standing directly where he is trying to walk,” the statement read.

Historians are already debating the relationship’s legacy. Some have described it as an inspiring demonstration of emotional openness, while others have questioned whether something lasting approximately one week can reasonably be assigned a legacy.

The National Archives has nevertheless agreed to preserve several artifacts from the era, including selected text messages, a coffee receipt, and four poems written during the relationship’s rise and fall.

An independent commission will investigate how three dates produced enough material for an entire romantic literary period.

Friends say the man is expected to recover, though estimates vary considerably. Optimistic projections suggest he could resume normal activity by Friday. More cautious models anticipate several additional days of reflection, jokes, and repeatedly telling people that he is “honestly fine.”

Officials stressed that the romantic infrastructure of the United States remains secure. Dating applications continue to function, coffee shops remain open, and millions of potentially compatible strangers are still wandering around pretending not to look at one another.

At press time, the man had eaten breakfast, checked his phone, and begun converting the emotional experience into content—leading experts to conclude that the healing process was already well underway.
